Los Alamitos Race Course officials announced via Twitter on Monday morning that they would continue to take entries for quarter-horse racing Saturday and Sunday even after owner Dr. Ed Allred threatened to permanently close the track last week at a meeting of the California Horse Racing Board.

Los Alamitos wrapped up a safe Thoroughbred meet Sunday with a record handle, but the CHRB had been concerned about the safety of the track after 29 fatalities were reported there during the past year.

The CHRB typically grants each track a year-long license but offered Los Alamitos only six months. The board said it would decide on the additional six months after reviewing the safety of the track in the first half of 2021.

Allred told the CHRB he would close the track for quarter-horse and Thoroughbred racing if he was not granted a full-year license.

While the CHRB is reconsidering its stance, the track is continuing normal operations.
