Los Alamitos Picks Up Fairplex Dates

During its monthly meeting Thursday at Los Alamitos, the California Horse Racing Board unanimously approved an agreement to transfer the upcoming race Barretts Sales and Racing meet at Fairplex Park to Los Alamitos.

Legislation permitting the transfer from Los Angeles to Orange County has already passed both the state Assembly and Senate and, as of Thursday morning, was awaiting the signature of Gov. Jerry Brown.

The 11-day meet will begin Friday, Sept. 5 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 21. There will be no live racing Wednesday, Sept. 10 and Wednesday, Sept. 17.

This addition means Los Alamitos will play host to three thoroughbred meets in 2014.

The Summer Festival kicks off Thursday, July 3 and concludes Sunday, July 13 while the Winter season will commence Thursday, Dec. 4 and wrap Sunday, Dec. 21.

“We’re very excited for the opportunity,’’ said Brad McKinzie, general manager of the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Racing Association. “We believe that the transfer of these dates is a positive move for the California horse racing industry.’’
