Longtime sire Slew City Slew pensioned

Grade 1-winning millionaire Slew City Slew, whose foals include Lava Man and Win City, has been pensioned due to declining fertility, Airdrie Stud announced.

Slew City Slew, 27, has stood at the Midway, Ky., farm since 1990.

Joseph Allen bred Slew City Slew, a Seattle Slew horse, and raced him in partnership with Tayhill Stable. Slew City Slew won 11 of his 42 starts for the partnership. Six of those were in stakes races, the most notable being his victories in the Grade 1 Oaklawn and Gulfstream Park Handicaps in 1989 and his 1988 score in the Polynesian Handicap, in which in he set a Laurel nine-furlong track record of 1:48.20.

At stud, Slew City Slew has sired 54 stakes-winners to date. The most famous of them are Lava Man, a seven-time Grade 1 winner who earned more than $5.6 million and won three consecutive Hollywood Gold Cups, equaling Native Diver’s feat in the 1960’s; Canada’s 2001 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old, Win City; Grade 1 winner Sis City; and millionaire graded winner Maysville Slew.
