Lone Star roundup: Mo Mosa earns win in Sexton Mile
Perry and Denise Martin's Mo Mosa, trained by Michael Maker tracked the front runners on the outside, made a four wide bid passed the quarter pole and drew clear in the stretch to win by three and a half lengths over favorite C Z Rocket to win the Steve Sexton Mile (G3) at Lone Star Park on Monday.
Silver Prospector was up for third with pacesetter Hunka Burning Love faded to fourth.
Next was Sheriff Brown followed by Warrior's Charge, who was off slow spotting the field four lengths, and Harvey Wallbanger completed the order of finish.
Fractional times were 24.70, 47.83, 1:11.55 and 1:23.95 for a final of 1:37.15. Track was sloppy going.
With Ramon Vazquez up, Mo Mosa went off at odds of 23-1 which returned $48.60 for his backers.
A 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo, out of the Eskendereya mare Roughing is now a graded stakes winner. The victory was his first graded stakes win and his fourth career win from 16 total starts. He has now bankrolled a total of $453,875.
Warrant takes win in inaugural Texas Derby
Twin Creek Racing Stables' Warrant, trained by Brad Cox, was up first to take the first running of the $300,000 Texas Derby.
Under the guidance of Joel Rosario Warrant ($7.80), the post time favorite, raced five wide into the first turn, he then settled down the backstretch while still racing outside. He stayed wide through the final turn and when asked, took charge approaching the sixteenth pole. He was full of run and won going away late, narrowly defeating Mr. Wireless.
Third went to Rightandjust with Super Stock completing the superfecta. In fifth place was Dreamer's Disease followed by First Avenue, Scarred, Say It Ain't Soni, It's My House and Get Her Number.
Final time for the mile and sixteenth was 1:45.03 on a sloppy racetrack. Splits were 23.48, 47.15, 1:11.41 and 1:38.20.
This was the first stakes victory for the son of Constitution and second career win from a total of five starts. Career earnings are now $294,700. He is out of the First Samaurai mare, Whisper Number.
My Boanerges wins Chamberlain Bridge off turf
After a significant delay in the racing action due to heavy rain, the $100,000 Chamberlain Bridge was taken off the turf. Underway on a very muddy main track, favorite Share the Upside and My Boanerges were out first with Share the Upside setting the pace by a head.
My Boanerges pressed the leader hard, gaining a short advantage for the final furlong and held on for the win.
Final time for the five furlongs was 57.34. The complete order of finish was My Boanerges ($11.20), Share the Upside, Texas Wedge, Seven Scents, Chaos Theory, Tempt Fate and Shangroyal. Archidust was a late scratch when the race was taken off the turf.
This was the sixth win (third stakes) for the New Mexico bred gelding by Diabolical. Winning connections were owner Nancy L. Lock, trainer Dallas Keen, with jockey Rodolfo Guerra in the irons.
My Boanerges increased his earnings to $228,670 from the victory.
