Kicking off Cigar Mile Day's stakes action, Alpha Delta Stables' homebred Lewis Bay made a splash in her stakes debut, taking the Grade 2, $300,000 Demoiselle by 1 ¾ lengths over Thrilled as the even-money favorite.
Lewis Bay, ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., settled towards the back of the pack, tracking an early pace set by Lost Raven, who led through an opening quarter-mile in 24.57 seconds and half in 50.04. Sweeping five wide into the stretch, the Chad Brown trainee drew clear under the wire to cover the 1 1/8 mile route in 1:53.41.
"Turning for home I sent her out and she really went fast," said Ortiz. "When she got the lead she was a little green; I think she was waiting for company. She went out a few paths because she changed leads a little early but I felt I had a lot of horse, so I felt comfortable taking her wide."
Lewis Bay paid $4.10 for the win. The victor's share of the purse boosts the Bernardini filly's lifetime earnings to $240,000 while pocketing 10 points on the Kentucky Oaks trail.
Disco Rose finished third, a neck ahead of Flora Dora in fourth. Lost Raven, Invite and Mo d'Amour completed the order of finish.
As Aqueduct's first official prep races for the 2016 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, the Remsen and Demoiselle are each worth a total of 17 points, divided 10-4-2-1 to the top four finishers towards a berth in their respective races at Churchill Downs in May. New York's Road to the Kentucky Derby will continue with the Grade 2 Jerome on January 2.
