Uncle Mo, a leading stallion and 2-year-old champion of 2010, was euthanized Thursday after surgery to treat a left foreleg injury. He was 16.

Owner Mike Repole posted news of his death on X.

Uncle Mo was sired by Indian Charlie and purchased by Repole for $220,000 as a yearling. Trained by Todd Pletcher, he was 3-for-3 as a 2-year-old, winning the Grade 1 Champagne and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile to earn the Eclipse Award.

His 3-year-old season was interrupted when he was found to have elevated levels of an enzyme that caused a liver disease. The levels were found to be elevated again in late 2011, after he finished 10th in the Breeders' Cup Classic, and he was retired. He had a career record of 8: 5-1-1 and earnings of $1.6 million.

Uncle Mo sired more than 100 stakes winners, according to Coolmore, where he stood at stud. The long list of standouts includes Nyquist, Adare Manor, Golden Pal and Mo Donegal.
