Laurel play of day: Can an apprentice work his magic?

Turf racing returned to Laurel Park last week, and it provided good returns to bettors, as the average win price over the first 11 grass races this year in Maryland was $11.92.

We're looking for similar value in race 7 on Friday, a $12,500 optional starter allowance. It is under those starter conditions that our pick no. 3 Minister of Magic qualifies, as he has traded frequently at the $7,500 tp $12,500 level and now is with his fifth trainer in as many months.

One thing new conditioner Kieron Magee is trying that others have not recently is a return to turf. Granted, the 0-for-5 record, including three losses at Laurel, does not inspire. But those were further back in this horse's career and against better than he'll face here. This Malibu Moon gelding also will stretch out to two turns and has speed, so apprentice Yan Rodriguez could have an opportunity to use his seven-pound weight allowance to put the field away early.

But not too early, as horses both to his inside and outside have more early speed. Minister of Magic has an opportunity to sit just behind them and get first run on the closers. He is 6-1 on the morning line and is worth a play as low as 3-1.

Coverage of Laurel Park is made possible through a marketing co-operative with the Maryland Jockey Club.
