Laurel will stay closed this week while dirt track is repaired
Laurel Park will remain closed this week as work continues on renovating the dirt track, the Maryland Jockey Club today announced Tuesday.
Laurel Park paused racing last Friday following a series of equine training and racing deaths. The dirt track, which underwent a complete renovation this summer, has been identified as the likely cause.
From the MJC:
"Track renovation plans have been developed in collaboration with The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Maryland Jockey Club and industry experts with the goal of having the safest possible racing surface.
"The Maryland racing industry remains laser focused on prioritizing the safety, health and welfare of equine athletes, and is committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that Maryland’s historic racing industry remains world-class.
According to a social media post from the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, a meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission is set for next Tuesday when a decision will be made on the track's suitability to resume racing.
The Maryland THA said if the track is given the OK, the plan would be for racing to commence next Thursday.
