Lassofthemohicans Bound for Ashland
Wachtel Stable, Brous Stable LLC and Meadowland Thoroughbreds’ Lassofthemohicians will try to enhance her chances of being a major player in the 3-year-old filly ranks when she takes a shot in Saturday’s $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1).
“She gets here tomorrow,” trainer Brendan Walsh said Monday morning. “I wanted to work her one more time down there (in Florida) before shipping and she worked Saturday at Palm Meadows (five furlongs in 1:02.45).”
A graduate of Keeneland’s 2013 September Yearling Sale, Lassofthemohicans has not run since a fifth-place finish in the Davova Dale (G2). Walsh opted to skip last Saturday’s Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2).
“I don’t know if she really liked the track down there,” Walsh said about the daughter of Indian Charlie. “The track is too speed-favoring and in the Davona Dale, I thought she’d be last at the three-eighths pole, but she hung in there. It was a funny track that day.”
In the Central Bank Ashland, which offers 170 points toward to the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs on May 1, Lassofthemohicans will race around two turns for the first time since November.
“She ran well here in the fall, and her first time going two turns at Churchill Downs, she was only beaten a length and a half by Birdatthewire and that was her third race around two turns,” Walsh said.
Birdatthewire, who also beat Lassofthemohicans in the Forward Gal (G2) in January, won last Saturday’s Gulfstream Park Oaks to emerge as the leading 3-year-old filly in South Florida.
In her runner-up finish in the Forward Gal, Lassofthemohicans picked up four points toward the Kentucky Oaks, which is limited to the top 14 point earners that pass the entry box. Points in the Central Bank Ashland are 100-40-20-10 for the first- through fourth-place finishers, respectively.
Five races remain on the Road to the Oaks with 20 points being the current cutoff line.
Already on the grounds for Walsh is Cary Street, the 9¼-length winner of the Las Vegas Marathon (G2) on the Breeders’ Cup undercard last fall at Santa Anita.
Unraced since a ninth-place finish in the Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) on Nov. 29, Cary Street could commence his 2015 campaign in an allowance test here on April
12.
WORK TAB
Bourbon Lane Stable’s Bourbon Courage tuned up for a likely start in Saturday’s $300,000 Commonwealth (G3) by working a half-mile in :47.20 over a fast track before the Monday morning renovation break. “He worked well,” trainer Kellyn Gorder said. “I got him in :34.30 for the first three-eighths and out in :47. He seems to like this track.” The work was the best of 25 at the distance. …
Working after the break was Pablo Del Monte, who covered five furlongs in company in 1:01. Trained by Wesley Ward, Pablo Del Monte finished third in last year’s Toyota Blue Grass (G1).
