Lady Apple leads Iowa Oaks; 12 enter Prairie Meadows' Iowa Derby
Lady Apple, third in the Kentucky Oaks, will make her first start since then in the July 5 Iowa Oaks, a Grade 3, $200,000 feature at Prairie Meadows.
The Steve Asmussen-trained daughter of Curlin on Friday drew post position No. 2 in a field of seven, with the Iowa Oaks the sixth race on a stakes-packed evening. Ricardo Santana received the return call on a filly who two starts back won Oaklawn Park's Fantasy Stakes (G3).
In other stakes action on the Prairie Meadows card, 12 have entered the $250,000 Iowa Derby, with Asmussen represented by allowance winner Fluminense, who switches back to dirt after running fifth in the Penn Mile (G3), and Shang, three times a Louisiana-bred stakes winner.
The Ron Moquett-trained Proverb enters off a third in Churchill Downs' Matt Winn (G3) behind Mr. Money and Signalman, while Top Line Growth is one to consider off a breakout allowance win June 8 at Laurel Park. Going a mile, the son of Tapizar won by eight lengths.
Both the Iowa Oaks and Iowa Derby run at 1 1/16 miles.
Also on the card is the $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap (G3) led by defending winner Remembering Rita, Sir Anthony and Exclamation Point, a sibling of champion Classic Empire; and the $100,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap.
