An owner rising in prominence, Jaime Roth’s LNJ Foxwoods, is part of the group that will campaign the younger half-brother of Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Roadster.

Gatewood Bell, head of Cromwell Bloodstock, signed the ticket for $950,000 during Wednesday’s third session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The gray colt, who shows quite a bit of resemblance to his sibling, was bred by Arthur Hancock’s Stone Farm.

“He’s just an athletic horse. His mare’s done it. The farm’s done it,” Bell said. “I know Arthur’s liked that colt from the day he’s born, so that’s good enough for me.”

Hip 414 is a Twirling Candy colt out of the Silver Ghost mare, Gold Dancing, whose progeny in addition to Roadster includes Ascend, who won the Manhattan (G1) on turf. As for the family connections, Bell said, “It couldn’t hurt.”

Bell purchased the horse mainly for Everett Dobson, who has campaigned, among others, Grade 1 winner Mastery, who retired undefeated due to injury to Claiborne Farm.

Roth’s LNJ Foxwoods has joined in partnership with a number of top horses, including the elevated Kentucky Derby winner Country House, and campaigns horses such as Test Stakes (G1) winner Covfefe.

Bell called Twirling Candy a sire “on an upward trajectory.” Still, he wished he didn’t have to go to nearly seven figures to tag this colt amid a hot market.

“I wish I was selling more,” Bell said said a smile. “It’s strong — a lot of really nice horses and a lot of enthusiastic buyers.”
