King’s Ghost goes last to first in Treasure Coast

Miller Racing’s King’s Ghost ($7.40) took the long way around the Gulfstream Park turf course Saturday but still managed to come away with a win by the slightest of noses in the $50,000 Treasure Coast Handicap.

Trained by Marty Wolfson, the 5-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper rallied from last in a field of 10 fillies and mares in the mile turf handicap to prevail over Quebec by a nose. After getting pinched back to trail the field into the backstretch, King’s Ghost was forced to race four wide while advancing on the leaders under Jorge Ruiz. Cowgirl Tough, a 50-1 outsider ridden by Ramsey Zimmerman, showed the way into the stretch, as King’s Ghost swung five wide coming off the final turn. Joined to his outside by Quebec, who made an impressive rush to grab a narrow lead in deep stretch, King’s Ghost fought back to capture her second straight race at Gulfstream.

“I had some trouble early and had to race really wide, but I waited to ask her and when I did, she really gave me a good kick,” Ruiz said through an interpreter.

King’s Ghost ran a mile over a firm turf in 1:36.13 to just edge Quebec and jockey Jose Batista. Cowgirl Tough hung on to finish third.
