King of Speed, a 10-year-old chestnut gelding based under trainer Bret Calhoun at the Fair Grounds, could be the poster old man for the determination of the equine athlete. It took King of Speed more than a year – and 10 starts – to reach the winner’s circle. His career began with a third-place finish in a maiden race on turf at Ellis Park in August 2001, and he didn’t win until he defeated $30,000 maiden claimers as a 3-year-old in a sprint on dirt at Ellis Park in August 2002.
