Kentucky Oaks 2018: Entries, odds and post positions

While 14 fillies were entered for the 2018 Kentucky Oaks, Friday's featured race at Churchill Downs looks like a two-horse race -- and the favorite will have to work for it.

Grade 1 Ashland Stakes winner Monomoy Girl on Monday morning drew post No. 14, while her top rival, Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks winner Midnight Bisou will break from the more favorable 10 stall.

Churchill odds maker Mike Battaglia established Monomoy Girl as the top morning line choice nonetheless.

Said her trainer, Brad Cox, of the post position: "It's not ideal."

“We’ll come up with a game plan and run the play," he added. "It is what it is. It’s horse racing.
Monomoy Girl is a good filly and good horses overcome things. We have to overcome the 14 hole. Obviously, we’ll have the speed to the inside of us. Hopefully, she can adjust. I think we learned as much about her in the (Feb. 17) Rachel Alexandra Stakes than any other race. She broke from the outside post that day.

"Obviously, there wasn’t 14 horses, but she broke a little slow and was able to adjust to the pace. It’s not where we want to be, but she’s a good horse and hopefully she can overcome. She’s ready to run, so hopefully she can get a good trip.

On the other side, "We're thrilled," said Jeff Bloom, who owns Midnight Bisou. "We weren't too concerned about the post position draw for our filly, but at the same time, we preferred not to have the 1 or 2 hole, and preferred to not have the extreme outside. So the 10 post is perfect."

Some draw day drama established the full field, with longshots Heavenhasmynikki and Kelly's Humor off the bubble and into the running with post time set for 6:12 p.m. ET Friday. NBC Sports Network will broadcast the Oaks, won last year by eventual 3-year-old champion Abel Tasman.

The weather is worth watching this week in Louisville, with rain in the forecast for Kentucky Oaks Day.
