Kentucky Derby works: Just Steel is 1 of 6 contenders on tab

Just Steel, second by eight lengths in the Grade 3 Southwest in his last start, returned to the work tab Thursday.

The Justify colt trained by D. Wayne Lukas breezed six furlongs in 1:15.0 at Oaklawn, the fastest of three at the distance.

The Southwest was the second consecutive runner-up effort by Just Steel after he lost by 2 1/2 lengths in the Smarty Jones in January. He is pointe to the Feb. 24 Rebel (G2) for his next start.

Just Steel was one of six horses in Kentucky Derby futures with published works Thursday.

Just Steel (Justify) worked six furlongs in 1:15.0 at Oaklawn on Thursday morning. It was the fastest of three works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed second in the Southwest (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on Feb. 3 for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Karlwithanarl (Klimt) worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds at The Thoroughbred Center on Thursday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 32 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won a starter allowance race going one mile on the synthetic at Turfway Park on Feb. 2 for trainer Robert Medina.

Raguel (Justify) worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds at Palm Meadows on Thursday morning. It was the fastest of 22 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed third in an allowance race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 5 for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Secret Chat (Union Rags) worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds at Palm Meadows on Thursday morning. It was the third fastest of 22 works at the distance. His previous work was 12 days ago going three furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed second in the Aventura going one mile on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Oct. 1 for trainer Roderick Rodriguez.

Stolen Magic (Good Magic) worked four furlongs in 52.5 seconds at Belmont Park on Thursday morning. It was the 18th fastest of 36 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed fifth in the Jimmy Winkfield going six furlongs on the main track at Aqueduct on Jan. 27 for trainer Linda Rice.

Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds at Payson Park on Thursday morning. It was the third fastest of nine works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won a maiden race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 31 for trainer Chad Brown.
