Kentucky Derby works: Baffert duo drill for Santa Anita Derby
Potente and Cherokee Nation, both ticketed for the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 4, were among several standouts from the Bob Baffert barn to record timed workouts Friday at Santa Anita. Each worked four furlongs in 48.0 seconds.
Potente, a high-priced son of Into Mischief, is 2-for-2. After a debut win sprinting six furlongs on Jan. 31, the $2.4 million auction buy came back to win the San Felipe (G2) when stretched to 1 1/16 miles on March 7. Friday’s work was his first since that victory.
Cherokee Nation, by Not This Time, is exiting a superlative maiden win going one mile on Feb. 27 at Santa Anita. The effort earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure from Daily Racing Form, the second-highest recorded by a 3-year-old this year.
Cannoneer (Into Mischief) worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Payson Park on Friday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 46 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start he placed fourth in the Holy Bull (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 31 for trainer Brad Cox.
Cherokee Nation (Not This Time) worked four furlongs in 48.0 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 35 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going three furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he won a maiden race going one mile on the main track at Santa Anita on Feb. 27 for trainer Bob Baffert.
Class President (Uncle Mo), a Grade 2 winner (2026 Rebel), worked four furlongs in 50.0 seconds at Palm Beach Downs on Friday morning. It was the 12th fastest of 16 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won the Rebel (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on March 1 for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Courting (Curlin) worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 at Palm Beach Downs on Friday morning. It was the fastest of four works at the distance.
