Kentucky Derby workout report: Update on 7 hopefuls

The Mendelssohn colt is winless in two starts, finishing third in maiden special weights at Del Mar and Santa Anita.

Frankie's Empire (Classic Empire) worked three furlongs in 36.5 seconds at Parx Racing on Thursday morning. It was the fastest of three works at the distance. His previous work was 12 days ago going five furlongs at Parx. In his last start he placed sixth in the Rocky Run going one mile on the main track at Delaware Park on Oct. 14 for trainer Susan L. Crowell.

Bartholdy (Mendelssohn) worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 at Santa Anita on Thursday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 17 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita Park. In his last start he placed third in a maiden race going one mile on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 10 for trainer Simon Callaghan.

Wednesday

Khanate (Hightail) worked five furlongs in 1:03.0 at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of 18 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going five furlongs at Belmont Park. In his last start he placed sixth in an allowance race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on Nov. 9 for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Antonio of Venice (Laoban) worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 59 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Belmont Park. In his last start he placed fourth in the Aspirant going 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Finger Lakes on Sept. 25 for trainer Rudy R. Rodriguez.

Big Effect (The Big Beast) worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday morning. It was the 18th fastest of 35 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Gulfstream Park. In his last start he placed third in the Juvenile Sprint going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 11 for trainer Edward Plesa Jr.

Bonus Move (Twirling Candy) worked four furlongs in 49.2 seconds at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday morning. It was the 12th fastest of 35 works at the distance.
