Kentucky Derby workout report: Fierceness, Locked drill in Florida

Todd Pletcher's top early contenders for Kentucky Derby 2024 worked Wednesday at Palm Beach Downs.

Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner Fierceness and Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity winner Locked each worked four furlongs, with Fierceness timed at 51.9 seconds and Locked at 50.9 seconds.

Fierceness is listed as the Derby co-favorite with Dornoch at 15-1 at Caesars Sportsbook in Nevada, and Locked is best-priced at 35-1 at Circa Sports.

Five horses in Derby futures books had published works Wednesday.

Fierceness (City of Light), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Breeders' Cup Juvenile), worked four furlongs in 51.9 seconds at Palm Beach Downs on Wednesday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 11 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going three furlongs at Palm Beach Downs. In his last start he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Locked (Gun Runner), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Breeders' Futurity), worked four furlongs in 50.9 seconds at Palm Beach Downs on Wednesday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 11 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going three furlongs at Palm Beach Downs. In his last start he placed third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 for trainer Todd Pletcher.

El Dinero (El Deal), worked four furlongs in 50.4 seconds at Delta Downs on Wednesday morning. It was the eigth fastest of 26 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed second in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile going six furlongs on the main track at Fair Grounds on Dec. 9 for trainer Patrick Devereux Jr.

Just Steel (Justify), worked five furlongs in 1:02.0 at Oaklawn on Wednesday morning. It was the third fastest of 13 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going five furlongs at Oaklawn. In his last start he won the Ed Brown going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Churchill Downs on Nov. 25 for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Khoolzan (Khozan), worked four furlongs in 51.9 seconds at Palm Meadows on Wednesday morning. It was the slowest of 44 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed second in a maiden race going seven furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 11 for trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo.
