The Derby Alumni tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the Kentucky Derby, both this year and in previous years, keeping up with what they have done since they ran for the roses.

2025 Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty continued his reign Saturday at Saratoga, winning the Grade 1 Travers by 10 lengths. Facing a field of five, he remained in range through the early and middle stages of the race then took over at will down the lane. He is expected to make his next start Nov. 1 at Del Mar in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Two others from the 2025 Kentucky Derby field contested the Robert Hilton Memorial on Friday at Charles Town. Neoequos prompted the pace, and though he could not hold off Barbadian Runner late, he held on for second, 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner. Owen Almighty, favored in his first start since the run for the roses, never got involved and was eased late, finishing eighth and last.

Five horses from the field are expected to race this weekend. Journalism will face older horses for the first time Saturday at Del Mar in the Pacific Classic (G1). Four others from the field will chase the big bucks on turf in the Nashville Derby (G3) at Kentucky Downs, Burnham Square, Final Gambit, Sandman and Tiztastic.

2024 Kentucky Derby

Seven entrants from the 2024 Kentucky Derby field have seen the starter in recent weeks. Sierra Leone, the reigning 3-year-old champion, returned to the winners' circle Aug. 2 at Saratoga in the Whitney (G1), rallying from last to score by a length over Highland Falls. That win earned him a berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic, which he won in 2024. He beat a field that included fellow 2024 Kentucky Derby alumnus Fierceness, who stalked the pace but flattened to fifth in the lane.

Two others recently ran in graded-stakes company. Stronghold, racing for the first time since January, ran a game second behind Dr. Venkman in the seven-furlong Pat O'Brien (G2) at Del Mar despite popping the gate before the race. Mystik Dan raced on grass for the first time in the Arlington Million (G1). He tracked the pace and threatened through midstretch but flattened late to finish fourth, 3 1/2 lengths behind Fort Washington.

Another pair from the list of 2024 entrants contested the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Mile at Ellis Park on Aug. 2. Encino set the pace, with Epic Ride haranguing him every step of the way. Neither of them could hold off long shot Beach Gold in the final furlong, but Epic Ride held for place and Encino rounded out the trifecta.

Resilience also raced in an optional-claiming allowance race at Saratoga on Aug. 9. He tracked in range through much of the turf mile but was outkicked in the lane and finished sixth, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner, Exact Estimate.

Three 2024 Kentucky Derby entrants are set to return to the starting gate in the coming days. Fierceness ships west to try to rebound from the Whitney and will face a field including Journalism and Nysos in the Pacific Classic (G1). Track Phantom will try to rebound in the Tapit Stakes on Saturday at Kentucky Downs. Mugatu is entered Wednesday at Saratoga in a $17,500 claiming race at a mile on the dirt.

2023 Kentucky Derby

Four horses from the 2023 Kentucky Derby field have seen recent action, with two finding the winners' circle.

Hit Show, making his second start back in the U.S. after his long-shot triumph in the Dubai World Cup (G1), won the West Virginia Governor's Stakes at Mountaineer for the second straight year on Aug. 3. He chased midfield early, engaged odds-on favorite Not This Boy in a duel through the final five-sixteenths and prevailed by a head.

King Russell made it back to the winners' circle as well on Aug. 11 at Ellis. Contesting a second-level allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt, King Russell tracked the pace, wore down pacesetter El Magnifico late and won by a neck.

Disarm, sent off a 46-1 outsider in the Whitney, took advantage of a fast pace in front of him to outrun those odds. Well off the pace early, he rallied to finish third, three lengths behind Sierra Leone.

Mandarin Hero tried turf for the first time in his career Sunday at Morioka in the Oro Cup. He stalked the pace and briefly had the lead, but he was unable to hold off winner Shiny Rock in the end and lost the place by a nose to Gold Gear. Still, he ran well enough to suggest that there could be more turf in his future.

2022 Kentucky Derby

Tawny Port, most recently fifth in the United Nations (G2), takes a class drop and stretches out for the Bowling Green Gold Cup on Saturday at Kentucky Downs. The race will be the longest distance of his career, going 2 1/16 miles on the undulating grass course. He raced in the Belmont Gold Cup (G3), which originally was carded for two miles on turf but was washed off to the dirt and run at 1 3/4 miles.

2021 Kentucky Derby

Things have been mostly quiet lately for the 2021 Kentucky Derby field. But Like the King recently was on the work tab, as he posted a four-furlong drill Aug. 5 at Colonial. It was his second work since a fifth-place finish in an allowance there July 12, though he has not returned to the tab in about three weeks since.

2020 Kentucky Derby

Enforceable continues to show up against group-level company in Perú. He broke through at the Group 1 level in June, and then lined up for the Clásico Independencia (G2) on July 29. He had won that race last year, though fell just short in his repeat effort. The flashy grey was keen to the early lead, and made most of the running. He drifted out into the lane, and despite carrying his pursuing foe Gluck out, Gluck overhauled him in the end.
