Kentucky Derby prep: Built leads rematch, full field in Lecomte

Built, who ran away to a 6 3/4-length victory last month in the Gun Runner, leads a Fair Grounds rematch next Saturday covering the same course and distance in the Grade 3, $250,000 Lecomte Stakes, a second-level points prep for Kentucky Derby 2025.

Second-place Magnitude and fourth-place Admiral Dennis also came out of the Gun Runner into the full field of 14 3-year-olds drawn into next weekend’s two-turn, 1 1/16-mile race. The Lecomte is worth 20-10-6-4-2 Derby qualifying points to the top five finishers.

A $260,000 Hard Spun colt owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trained by Wayne Catalano, Built won his last two starts as a 2-year-old. His gate-to-wire triumph in the Gun Runner earned him 10 Derby qualifying points and a Beyer Speed Figure of 92, according to Daily Racing Form. Jareth Loveberry will ride him again, this time from post 13.

Magnitude, an allowance winner, raced in second all the way round the track in the Gun Runner. Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and trained by Steve Asmussen, the Not This Time colt will carry José Ortiz from post 4.

Admiral Dennis was the 4-5 favorite in the Gun Runner, where he stumbled out of the gate and never got closer than 1 1/2 lengths at any call. The maiden winner by Constitution is owned by Albaugh Family Stables and trained by Brad Cox. Joel Rosario has the mount and will go from post 3.

Golden Afternoon, the runner-up in the Bourbon (G2) at Keeneland, makes his turf debut for trainer Nick Vaccarezza, 25, who is taking over the stable that was run by his father Carlo Vaccarezza.

The Lecomte is the last of 12 races on next Saturday’s card. It is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. EST. The first post is at 1 p.m.
