Kentucky Derby odds: Journalism is atop the last 39 in futures

Every spring the Kentucky Derby futures market is a lot like the TV show “Survivor.” It turns into a process of elimination with each major prep race.

This week’s episode is the rite of passage, where the finalists walk past the torches belonging to the eliminated contestants. California Burrito, Cyclone State, Disco Time, Magnitude and Speed King all won points preps. So did Jonathan’s Way long ago in September. And of course there were the much-celebrated Cornucopian and former favorite Barnes, that pair who came with all the anticipation of trainer Bob Baffert’s return to the Derby.

When they were in winner’s circles, those names represented perceived value and long-range hope. Now their tickets are worthless reminders of how tough Derby futures are to play.

It seems to get easier now with Journalism the acclaimed favorite and a virtual yes-or-no proposition. After he closed Saturday at 5-1 in the final pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby Future Wager from Churchill Downs, he won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and shortened from 7-1 to 7-2 in Nevada fixed odds.

Races in the past week moved the needle considerably. Rodríguez won the Wood Memorial (G2) on Saturday at Aqueduct, and he plunged from 50-1 to 16-1 in Las Vegas. Now regarded by bettors’ consensus as Baffert’s best chance to win the Derby, he has KDFW backers salivating after he closed at 62-1.

Admire Daytona, the Japan colt who arrives in Kentucky on Wednesday, was there for the taking at 250-1 last week. Since he won the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan, he was cut to 80-1 in Nevada and was one of the all others in the KDFW mutuel play at 26-1.

Conversely, those 19-1 pari-mutuel slips with Chancer McPatrick on them look tattered after he finished in a dead heat for last Tuesday in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland. Las Vegas moved him from 33-1 to 75-1. At least that price is still there if there are any takers.

Between Caesars Sportsbook and the Westgate Superbook, there were 39 horses showing Wednesday morning in the futures available to Nevada bettors and out-of-state players using licensed proxies. The horses are listed in order of their best fixed-odds prices in bold. Their closing KDFW pari-mutuel odds also are shown.
