Kentucky Derby leaderboard: Standings with 8 races to go
American Promise went from 50th to fifth in the points standings for Kentucky Derby 2025 after his win in Saturday's Virginia Derby.
The Justify colt, who previously had five points for his fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Risen Star, picked up another 50 points with his 7 3/4-length win at Colonial Downs. Purchased as a yearling for $750,000 and owned by BC Stables, American Promise is trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
Getaway Car, fourth in the Virginia Derby, picked up 10 points to move into eighth place with 46 in total. He was seventh last week but was bumped a spot as American Promise moved above him.
Render Judgment, second in the Virginia Derby, is in the 14 spot with 29 points, third-place finisher Omaha Omaha is at no. 15 with 26 points, and fifth-place finisher Studlydoright is at no. 33 with 11 points.
The Virginia Derby was the last Kentucky Derby qualifier that offers 50 points to the winner. The next seven stops on the trail offer 100 points to the winner at 50 to the runner-up, virtually assuring them of a ticket to the Churchill Downs starting gate.
Saturday's Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) and Louisiana Derby (G2) are the next points preps, followed the next weekend by the Florida Derby (G1) and Arkansas Derby (G1) and then the Wood Memorial (G2), Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Blue Grass (G1) on April 5.
The last stop on the road to the Kentucky Derby is the Lexington (G3) on April 12, with 20 points going to the winner.
