Kentucky Derby grade: Golden Tempo vs. handicapping trends

Golden Tempo may have been 23-1 on the toteboard, but he checked some historically significant handicapping boxes before he won Saturday in Kentucky Derby 2026.

He passed the time-tested Final Fractions Theory and a minimum threshold in Brisnet Speed Ratings. He also avoided curses by not being the New Year’s Day favorite in Las Vegas or in the February pool of pari-mutuels offered by Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. And he had nothing to do with post 17 and the Grade 2 UAE Derby, both of which continued to be shut out.

What's next for Kentucky Derby 2026 horses?

There was a standard that Golden Tempo did not meet, but even that miss in Beyer Speed Figures falls in line with other recent winners.

Final Fractions Theory, pass*

Deep closers thrive when they are viewed through this prism. Golden Tempo came into the Derby with closing fractions of 12.4 and 37.1 seconds for the last one and three furlongs of his third-place finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 21 at Fair Grounds.

He became the fifth consecutive Derby winner to meet at least one requirement of the theory. It favors horses who are clocked at 13.0 seconds or better in the last furlong of their final preps or 38.0 in the last three furlongs. Golden Tempo was the 32nd cashable Derby winner in the last 37 years to achieve at least half that and the 26th to meet both criteria. Cashable winners include promoted victor Country House, who met the standard in 2019, and the eventually disqualified Medina Spirit, who did not in 2021.

There is an asterisk this year. The formula advanced by writer-turned-publicist Jennie Rees was built primarily on 1 1/8-mile final preps. The Louisiana Derby was 1 3/16 miles.

Adding another 110 yards Saturday, Golden Tempo was even more impressive. In his first start at Churchill Downs, he went the last eighth of a mile in 12.08 seconds and the last three in 36.87, according to the Equibase GPS chart. It was with three furlongs to go where Sovereignty was last charted in last place.

The Final Fractions Theory eliminated seven of the 18 eventual starters in the Derby, including third-place Ocelli.

Beyer Speed Figure, fail

Golden Tempo came to Churchill Downs with a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 88, according to Daily Racing Form. That was how he was graded for the Louisiana Derby. That made him only the sixth cashable Kentucky Derby winner out of the last 35 who did not bring in a best Beyer of at least 95.

Recently, though, three of the last five Derby winners entered the race with nothing but sub-95 Beyers. They included Rich Strike in 2022 and Mage in 2023.

This year proved to be a broader vertical anomaly. Third-place Ocelli and sixth-place Incredibolt also failed to hit the 95 mark. Second-place Renegade, with a previous 98, and Chief Wallabee, with a 100, were the best finishers of the horses who met the threshold.

Eight of 15 Derby starters had Beyers of 95 or better before Saturday. International starters Danon Bourbon in fifth, Wonder Dean in eighth and Six Speed in 13th were not measured beforehand.

As for Saturday itself, Golden Tempo got a 95 Beyer, the lowest for a Derby winner since legendary turf writer Andy Beyer refined the figures he created more than 55 years ago. Even so, it continued a forward progression that has gone uninterrupted since a debut victory in December at Fair Grounds.

Brisnet Speed Rating, pass

Ten of the 15 U.S.-based starters in the Derby had previous bests of at least 100 in the Brisnet Speed Ratings. Golden Tempo had a 100 in the Louisiana Derby, and he matched that career best with Saturday’s triumph.

That made it 21 times in the last 27 runnings of the Derby that the cashable winner had come in with a Brisnet rating in triple digits. Second-place Renegade and third-place Ocelli did not.

Mid-pack or closer, pass

This is a trendy trend.

Golden Tempo became the fifth cashable winner in the last eight years to bring an off-the-pace style into the Derby, according to Quirin Speed Points at Brisnet. He came into Saturday with an S 0 rating, indicative of the deepest of closers.

The rating created in 1979 by mathematics professor Dr. William Quirin was intended to map pace, not forecast performance. Evidence of that comes from the fact that 15 of 20 cashable winners from 1999 to 2018 had E or E/P ratings that frank pacesetters and stalkers. That form clearly has reversed itself.

Toss winter book & February KDFW, pass

According to an entry that used to be in the Kentucky Derby media guide, Spectacular Bid in 1979 and Street Sense in 2007 were the only two Jan. 1 winter-book favorites who have won in the last 48 runnings of the Derby.

This year Ted Noffey was the 8-1 favorite on New Year’s Day at Caesars Sportsbook in Nevada. Less than a month later, it was revealed he was diagnosed with some bone bruising, and he was off the trail. The winter-book curse held again.

Golden Tempo did not show up in the Las Vegas futures until he won the Lecomte (G3) on Jan. 17. He opened at 30-1.

The heavier millstone may be stuck on the individual favorite in the February pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Paladin earned that distinction when he won Feb. 14 in the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds. He closed at 9-1 and has not raced since, making the individual February favorite 0-for-21.

Golden Tempo was 32-1 in that KDFW pool.

UAE Derby toss & post 17 jinx, pass

UAE Derby graduates are 0-for-23 in the Kentucky Derby. Two years after Forever Young came two noses from erasing that zero, the race in Dubai continued its regression to the old mean. This year’s graduates Wonder Dean and Six Speed finished eighth and 13th, respectively.

Six Speed had the double whammy. He became the 48th Derby starter to come out of post 17. All 48 have lost.
