Kentucky Derby alumni: Get updates on 17 horses

The Derby Alumni tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the Kentucky Derby this year and in previous years, keeping up with what they have done since they ran for the roses.

2025 Kentucky Derby

Six entrants from the 2025 Kentucky Derby field have raced in recent weeks, including a pair of stakes winners. Grande, bet down to 1-9 odds in the Ghostzapper (G3) on March 28 at Gulfstream, set the pace and won by a measured three-quarters of a length, his second win of the year. Publisher, who ran in the Kentucky Derby as a maiden, extended his win streak to three with a victory March 28 in the American Pharoah Overnight Stakes at Oaklawn. Midfield early, he edged closer around the backstretch and then rallied to the lead in the final furlong, winning by 1 1/2 lengths.

Two others raced in the Oaklawn Mile (G3), both running in the money. East Avenue tracked the pace and made up ground late but came three-quarters of a length short of catching Nu What's New. Neoequos, switching from turf back to dirt, tracked just behind East Avenue for much of the race but was outfinished by that one, finishing third by 1 1/2 lengths. Coal Battle, a fellow Kentucky Derby alumnus, was scratched from the race.

Owen Almighty, sent off the favorite in the seven-furlong Army Mule at Gulfstream Park on March 6, stalked the pace but could not sustain a bid into the lane and weakened to seventh, 5 3/4 lengths behind winner Pentathlon.

Render Judgment, making his second start since the Kentucky Derby last year, came close in a first-level allowance. He settled toward the rear of a compact field and ran on late but finished second by a neck, just missing front-running long shot B Sudd.

American Promise, unraced since finishing eighth in the Preakness last May, returns to action Thursday in a second-level allowance-optional claiming race at Oaklawn. The 4-1 morning-line third choice of seven, he will go 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for trainer Steve Asmussen.

2024 Kentucky Derby

Six entrants from the 2024 Kentucky Derby saw recent action.

The Dubai World Cup (G1) remains one of the few prizes to elude Forever Young. Taking his second shot at it on March 28, he tried to reel in Magnitude but fell a length short in the end. He had been third in the 2025 Dubai World Cup, behind Hit Show and Mixto.

Two others from the 2024 Kentucky Derby field raced in the Kentucky Cup Classic (G3) at Turfway on March 21. Honor Marie broke a bit slow and made a late run but had to settle for third, 2 1/4 lengths behind Willy D's. Endlessly chased mid-pack but came up empty in the lane, finishing seventh beaten 11 lengths.

Three others recently raced in non-stakes races. Mugatu settled a long-looking last early in a 1 1/16-mile starter-optional claimer at Laurel on March 15 but made a smart move around the far turn and cleared off in the lane to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Resilience contested a 6 1/2-furlong allowance-optional claimer Saturday at Aqueduct, where he disputed the pace early but emptied out to finish a well-beaten third, 10 1/4 lengths behind Porosity. Society Man contested a 1 1/8-mile allowance-optional claimer at Aqueduct on March 27. He chased toward the rear early and was eased in the lane, crossing the wire last of seven behind Wynstock.

2023 Kentucky Derby

Three horses entered in the 2023 Kentucky Derby have run in recent weeks. Raise Cain ran in the Native Dancer at 1 1/8 miles at Laurel on Saturday. He settled at the rear and, despite getting a contested pace in front of him, never got into contention and finished fifth, 24 3/4 lengths behind runaway winner Wild Vine.

Two others from the field raced in Japan. Derma Sotogake contested the Diolite Kinen at Funabashi on March 11, going 1 1/2 miles on the dirt. He tracked in third for much of the race, but flattened out late for sixth, nine lengths behind winner Odilon. Continuar raced twice in March. He finished eighth of 16 behind Nansei White in the seven-furlong Fujino Wave Kinen at Oi, chasing well behind the pace and only passing a few late. Then he was 11th of 14 behind George Tesoro in the Keisei Hai Grand Milers on March 31 at Funabashi, settling off the pace and flattening out.

2022 Kentucky Derby

No horses from the 2022 Kentucky Derby field raced within the last four weeks, though both Tawny Port and White Abarrio have been on the work tab in recent days.

2021 Kentucky Derby

No one in the 2021 Kentucky Derby has raced in recent weeks, though Like the King is active on the work tab at Casse Training Center.

2020 Kentucky Derby

No one in the 2020 Kentucky Derby field has seen recent action. The last horse in the field to race was Enforceable, who was second in the Clásico Ciudad de Lima (G2) in January but has not raced since.
