Kentucky Derby Top 50: Big changes on the horizon

Horse Racing Nation’s Kentucky Derby 2018 Top 50 — a ranking of top contenders set by our readers — showed little movement this week with the Derby trail quiet.

Plenty of movement could be ahead after the events of next Saturday, when points-paying preps run at Gulfstream Park (Grade 2 Holy Bull), Santa Anita Park (Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis) and Aqueduct (Grade 3 Withers).

Still, we’re not expecting the top three to change if they haven’t by now. The leaders are recently named 2-year-old champion Good Magic, followed by Bolt d’Oro and Solomini. Each will open their sophomore seasons after next weekend.

Enticed, the No. 4 horse, will be among the Holy Bull favorites having won Churchill Downs’ Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club last time out. Catholic Boy is in the No. 5 spot.

Others in the top 10 expected to run next weekend include No. 7 Firenze Fire and No. 9 Avery Island, both candidates for the Withers. Marconi, who’s 13th in our poll, is also a Withers probable, indicating the race could have a short but highly regarded field on the New York circuit.

The Kentucky Derby 2018 Top 50 rankings are assembled based on votes cast by HRN readers. To add your own ratings, simply hit register at the top of our website to begin. The list is updated hourly.
