Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Odds, moves through 2 days

Epicenter was still the favorite early on the third day of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. But like clockwork, the odds for Smile Happy plunged.

The morning-line favorite for Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland went from 15-1 on Thursday to 6-1 on by Saturday morning, attracting $18,087 in new wagers.

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, who owns Smile Happy’s sire Runhappy, made sizable bets into the first four pools of the KDFW. He had not responded Saturday morning to a text message from Horse Racing Nation to find out if he contributed to the handle again this week.

For the second day in a row, Epicenter carried 9-2 odds in the national pari-mutuel pool, no doubt on the strength of his two most recent victories in Grade 2 preps at Fair Grounds.

Messier and Forbidden Kingdom were 9-1 to win the May 7 classic with $1,377 separating them in a win pool that held $86,750 on Saturday morning, only hours before their showdown in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).

The final pool of the KDFW closes Saturday at 4:30 p.m. EDT. That is 15 minutes before the start of the Wood Memorial (G2), the first of the day’s three major Derby preps.

These were the KDFW odds Saturday at 8:50 a.m. EDT, also showing the morning line, Friday’s odds, trainers and sires.
