Kentucky Derby: Forecast predicts 40 percent chance of rain

Five days out from Kentucky Derby 2024, there is a 40 percent chance of race-day rain.

According to a Monday forecast from the National Weather Service, Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers and a high near 78.

Chances are higher for wet weather on Kentucky Oaks day. The forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain on Friday, with thunderstorms possible after 3 p.m EDT. The high is expected to be near 78, just like on Kentucky Derby day. A 70 percent chance of rain continues overnight Friday according to the prediction, with thunderstorms possible until 3 a.m. EDT on Saturday.

The last days leading into Oaks day are expected to be mostly dry. There is a 90 percent chance of rain overnight Monday into Tuesday and a 60 percent chance of rain on Tuesday, but Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny and Thursday's prediction calls for sunny weather. According to the forecast, the chance of rain begins again early Friday morning, with a 30 percent chance of overnight showers after 3 a.m. EDT.
