Kentucky Derby: All others close 4-5, Locked 14-1 in futures pool
The mutuel field of 2-year-olds who were not among 38 horses individually listed in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Thursday as the 4-5 favorite in the first of seven pools before America’s biggest race is run May 4.
According to final figures shown at TwinSpires, $55,782 came into the win pool for all other 2-year-old males, or 42 percent of the $132,033.
Locked, the morning-line favorite Friday in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, closed as the top individual choice in the KDFW at 14-1. Owned by Gary Broad and Aron Wellman and trained by Todd Pletcher, the 2-year-old Gun Runner colt most recently won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland.
Dornoch, a Good Magic colt who was a maiden winner last month at Keeneland for trainer Danny Gargan, surprisingly was next at 19-1. Timberlake, a colt by Into Mischief who won the Champagne (G1) for trainer Brad Cox, closed at 20-1. Timberlake is in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but Dornoch is not.
Another $32,245 went into the exacta pool, where all others over Locked closed as the favorite. That result would pay $50 for a successful $2 bet.
The combined $164,278 handle in win and exacta bets represented a 43 percent increase from the $114,910 that came in for pool 1 last year, according to Churchill Downs.
As it was the past two years, horses trained by Bob Baffert were not among the individual choices since he continues to serve an indefinite suspension imposed by Churchill Downs Inc. for Medina Spirit’s failed drug test from the 2021 Derby. Any of Baffert’s horses who might be transferred to eligible trainers might show up in subsequent KDFW pools. For the first pool they were part of the all-others bet.
These were the closing win odds and $2 will pays reported by Churchill Downs on Thursday after the 6 p.m. EDT close of betting that had begun Tuesday.

Caesars Sportsbook of Nevada, which absorbed William Hill, opened its Derby futures Thursday afternoon. Circa Sports in Las Vegas said it expected to have its first Derby futures written and open in December. Both those markets are limited to Nevada.
The next pari-mutuel KDFW will be Nov. 23-26, spanning the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
