Kentucky Derby 2026 works: Ottinho eyes Wood Memorial
Ottinho, a half-brother to Hall of Famer Gun Runner, worked a half-mile in 50.77 seconds Sunday over the Belmont Park dirt training track as he eyes a potential start in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial on April 4 at Aqueduct.
"I'm planning on keeping him eligible for the Wood. I think he's a good horse," trainer Chad Brown said of the Kentucky homebred, who picked up six Kentucky Derby points for a third-place finish in the Listed Withers on Feb. 6. The nine-furlong Wood Memorial offers 100-50-25-15-10 Derby qualifying points to the top five finishers.
The well-related bay, by Quality Road out of the graded stakes-winning Giant's Causeway mare Quiet Giant, graduated in his second start over stablemate Hadrian's Wall on Dec. 31 at Aqueduct before his stakes debut in the Withers.
Ottinho was one of 15 Kentucky Derby 2026 hopefuls to drill Sunday.
Bull by the Horns (Essential Quality) worked four furlongs in 47.8 seconds at Gulfstream Park on Sunday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 46 works at the distance.
