Kentucky Derby 2026 works: Buetane leads hopefuls on tab

Buetane drilled at Santa Anita Park on Sunday ahead of his expected start in the Grade 2 San Vicente.

The son of Tiz the Law placed second in the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga last time out.

The 3-year-old colt breezed five furlongs in 59.4 seconds, second fastest of 62 at the distance.

Buetane broke his maiden at Del Mar on Aug. 3. He has a career record of 2: 1-1-0 with earnings of $108,000 for owner Zedan Racing Stables.

Buetane was one of eight horses with odds in Las Vegas + other HRN top contenders on Sunday.

Buetane (Tiz the Law) worked five furlongs in 59.4 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the second fastest of 62 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed second in the Hopeful (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Sept. 1 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Bull by the Horns (Essential Quality) worked four furlongs in 51.7 seconds at Gulfstream Park on Sunday morning. It was the 37th fastest of 43 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going three furlongs at Gulfstream Park. In his last start he won a maiden race going one mile on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 1 for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

Cherokee Nation (Not This Time) worked five furlongs in 59.8 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the fourth fastest of 62 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed fifth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Desert Gate (Omaha Beach), a Grade 3 winner (2025 Best Pal), worked five furlongs in 1:00.2 at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the 11th fastest of 62 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed second in the American Pharoah (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Oct. 4 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Diciassette (Mitole) worked four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Palm Meadows on Sunday morning. It was the 13th fastest of 51 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed fourth in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Keeneland on Oct. 4 for trainer Patrick Biancone.

Ewing (Knicks Go), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Saratoga Special), worked five furlongs in 1:03.0 at Oaklawn on Sunday morning. It was the 16th fastest of 23 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Oaklawn. In his last start he won the Saratoga Special (G2) going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Aug. 2 for trainer Mark Casse.

Plutarch (Into Mischief) worked five furlongs in 59.6 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the third fastest of 62 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he won a maiden race going 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Del Mar on Nov. 30 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Renegade (Into Mischief) worked four furlongs in 49.7 seconds at Palm Beach Downs on Sunday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 14 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Palm Beach Downs. In his last start he placed second in the Remsen (G2) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Aqueduct on Dec. 6 for trainer Todd Pletcher.
