The road to Kentucky Derby 2025 began Sept. 14 at Churchill Downs, ended April 12 at Keeneland and included 36 points prep races, with 107 different horses winning qualifying points. With 17 days until the run for the roses, 45 is the number of points required to get in the starting gate. At this time last year, the number was 40.

During the points era, which began in 2013, there were some clear trends from the 12 horses who crossed the finish line in front. These statistics include Medina Spirit and Maximum Security, who were disqualified from their first-place finishes.

Eight of the winners prepped for the Derby with a victory in a 100-point race. Four were in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, two in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and one each in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and the Haskell (G1).

Only four run for the roses victors rallied from far back to win, Orb in 2013 and the last three years with Mystik Dan, Mage and Rich Strike. The other eight were either front runners or stalkers, and none of them ever were farther back than third place.

The favorite lost in the last five runnings of the Kentucky Derby, producing winners who had odds from 4.1-1 to 80.8-1, and only two of the favorites finished in the top three. Six favorites in a row from 2013 to 2018 were the winner with odds, ranging from 2.30-1 to 5.40-1

The projected field, as it currently stands, includes 20 horses who are listed in order of possible-morning line odds, sire, trainer, probable jockey assignment, Derby points earned, most recent race result, their highest Beyer Speed Figure from Daily Racing Form, career record and earnings.

He stumbled badly in the start of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and lost all chance. East Avenue showed speed in the Risen Star (G2) to start 2025 but faded to 10th. Grande, 20-1. Curlin – Todd Pletcher / John Velazquez - 50, 2nd Wood Memorial, 97 – 3: 2-1-0, $228,200. Grande won his first two starts at Gulfstream during the winter going a mile and then another furlong after pressing the pace. In the Wood Memorial he rallied from seventh and a second-place finish got him eligible for the Derby. Summary: Journalism and Sovereignty look like the most likely winners of the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Six other horses are considered here as win contenders.

Frequently, the Derby trifecta has a generous payout because of the 20-horse field even if the favorite is the winner. Because Journalism has distinguished himself as the horse to beat, keying him in the trifecta with the other win contenders is a worthy wagering possibility.
