Kentucky Derby 2024 rankings: Top 50 is looking thin

No More Time looked good winning the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay this weekend, but otherwise there wasn't much change to Horse Racing Nation's Kentucky Derby 2024 top 50 list. Overall, the 3-year-old ranks are looking a little thin, but the Risen Star (G2) could change that this weekend. 

First, looking back on the Sam F. Davis, we saw the biggest movement from the key players. No More Time moved from outside the top 50 to no. 12, and Change of Command dropped from no. 13 to no. 34 and probably could drop further as time goes on based on his 11th-place finish in the Davis. Agate Road's second-place finish in the race hasn't exactly impressed as he moved from no. 18 to no. 17. 

Looking ahead to the Risen Star, we will see a whopping eight of the top 50 contenders racing, no. 2 Track Phantom, no. 4 Honor Marie, no. 5 Sierra Leone, no. 14 Catching Freedom, no. 15 Real Men Violin, no. 18 Hall of Fame, no. 27 Moonlight and no. 29 Cardinale.  

Overall, the Derby contender ranks are starting to thin out as time and the preps move on. 

Elsewhere on the Derby trail, no. 44 Bentornato goes in the Saudi Derby, although no points are on the line. And Beeline won a maiden race at Gulfstream this weekend but has not yet made our top 50 list.
