Kentucky Derby 2024 odds: Las Vegas vs. pari-mutuels

If his mid-afternoon pari-mutuel price were to hold through post time in Kentucky Derby 2024, consensus favorite Fierceness will carry more value at the track than he showed in the Nevada fixed-odds market on Saturday.

Even though his odds went longer at three Las Vegas books, the Eclipse Award recipient and runaway winner of the Grade 1 Florida Derby was no better than the plus 260, slightly longer than 5-2, that he was showing at Circa Sports. At Churchill Downs he was 7-2, plus 350, on the toteboard showing nationwide betting into the win pool at 4:05 p.m. EDT, a little more than three hours before the race.

Second choice Sierra Leone also was a better bet in the nationwide pari-mutuels with odds of 5-1 vs. his 9-2 best fixed odds at the Westgate Superbook.

Catching Freedom was 8-1 in both markets. Forever Young drifted to 9-1 at Caesars while showing at 6-1 at the track.

Some of the longest shots had the bigger disparities Saturday afternoon. Mystik Dan was 40-1 in Nevada and 15-1 in the pari-mutuels. Grand Mo the First was 100-1 at Las Vegas and 44-1 at the track.

The Nevada bookmakers assume a different risk since they lock in odds at the time of the bet even though they are not action until the race starts at 7:03 p.m. EDT. Those markets will be closed shortly before post time.

These were the prices showing at the three Nevada shops taking fixed-odds action for the Derby. They are shown with the Churchill Downs pari-mutuels at 4:05 p.m. EDT.
