Kentucky Derby 2023: See how Las Vegas odds compare
Nevada oddsmakers had four-time Grade 1 winner Forte as long as 4-1 on Friday to win Kentucky Derby 2023. By the time business was settled for the night in Las Vegas, he shortened to a best price of 7-2.
As was the case in the Churchill Downs pari-mutuel win pool, Caesars Sportsbook, Circa Sports and the Westgate SuperBook all showed four horses with fixed odds shorter than 10-1. Forte’s stablemate Tapit Trice was best-priced at 6-1, Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Angel of Empire 7-1 and Japan shipper Derma Sotogake 9-1.
Two Phil’s, who won the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3), appeared to be generating most of the steam since four entries from the main field were scratched Thursday and Friday. His best odds were cut from 20-1 to 13-1.
Of the also-eligible horses who drew into what has become a field of 19, Santa Anita Derby (G1) runner-up Mandarin Hero attracted the most attention with Nevada bettors. The Japan-trained colt shortened to 20-1. Just four days ago the Westgate had him at 100-1. Those tickets looked then like refunds. Now they are catnip for players who can used them as backstops for hedging.
Unlike the futures market that was in play since last fall, bets into these Las Vegas pools reopened Monday and Tuesday are not action until the race begins. That meant refunds for bettors who wagered on Skinner, Practical Move, Lord Miles and Continuar since Monday’s draw.
The other lure of the fixed-odds market is that bettors lock in their prices at the moment they make their wagers with bookmakers assuming the risk on overlays. The pari-mutuel pool that will take in most of the money will not have firm odds until the race begins Saturday at about 6:57 p.m. EDT.
