Watch: Todd Pletcher discusses his Ky. Derby contenders
Trainer Todd Pletcher spoke Saturday morning about the final Kentucky Derby works for Mo Donegal, Charge It and Pioneer of Medina. He discussed what goes into his considerations for workouts and workmates, looked at Pioneer of Medina's Kentucky Derby chances, and provided an update about his Oaks contenders as well.
All three of Pletcher's Kentucky Derby contenders worked Saturday morning. Mo Donegal worked inside of Swale (G3) winner My Prankster, going four furlongs in 48.6 seconds and galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.80.
Charge It and Pioneer of Medina worked in company Saturday morning, and Pletcher indicated that he intended a stronger workout for them than for Mo Donegal. According to Kevin Kerstein of Churchill Downs, they worked four furlongs in 47.4 seconds, with internal splits of 12.2, 23.6, and 35.8 seconds. They galloped out in 59.6 seconds for five furlongs and 1:12.4 for six furlongs.
A loose horse alarm went off during their workout. However, the horse exited the track before Charge It and Pioneer of Medina galloped near them, and they were able to complete their drill safely.
Pioneer of Medina still sits 21st on the points list for the Kentucky Derby. His best chance to get into the main field would be if trainer Chad Brown routes Early Voting to the Preakness instead of the Kentucky Derby. Should that happen, Pletcher indicated that Pioneer of Medina would run. However, he has not yet decided if Pioneer of Medina would run if he has to draw in off of the also-eligible list.
