Kentucky Derby 2020 odds: The board expands in Las Vegas
While William Hill U.S.' board for the 2020 Kentucky Derby shows a familiar bunch of favorites, an expanded group of longshots are also available in an updated look at the odds.
The top choices into the new year are Wednesday's Jerome Stakes favorite Independence Hall and Tiz the Law, who was defeated in his last start but took money after winning the Champagne Stakes (G1) two back. Both sit at 8-1 with other Grade 1 winners Storm the Court and Maxfield next at 12-1.
Dennis' Moment, who stumbled at the start of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and never had a chance after that, also remains low at 14-1.
As for December's top points earners, Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) hero Thousand Words is down to 16-1, while Springboard Mile winner Shoplifted remains a lofty 75-1. The upset Remsen Stakes (G2) winner Shotski's 125-1.
Given all of that, if you're in Nevada and looking for a wise play, consider these:
• Ajaaweed (50-1) had all the work to do in the Remsen and was essentially the only horse to rally significantly on his way to a runner-up finish. He has the bloodlines of a serious horse, and there's a case to be made that he ran back too quickly from a big maiden-breaking effort when fourth in Keeneland's Breeders' Futurity less than a month later.
• Ancient Warrior (50-1) hails from the first crop of Constitution and may have beaten some quality horses on debut Nov. 23 when distancing away by 4 1/2 lengths. He's trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and will likely be forced to prep at Oaklawn Park rather than in California, where the Hall of Famer's horses are barred from running.
• Great Power (70-1) has largely been forgotten since his first and only start on Sept. 29, an easy victory at Santa Anita Park. While a minor setback prevented him from running again as a 2-year-old, trainer Simon Callaghan recently offered a positive update, saying he believes this Blame colt is of the caliber that he can hop right back in for a two-turn prep.
• And if you're strictly looking for triple-digit odds, why not Soros (150-1)? Trainer Gustavo Delgado retains a minority share after Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners bought in following a Dec. 30 victory in Gulfstream Park's Smooth Air Stakes. Connections are looking to go 1 1/8 miles next in what will be the Commissioner colt's third career outing. He appears to have a high ceiling.
