Kentucky Derby 2020 Rankings: Futurity, Remsen winners factor

Last weekend's preps didn't amount to change at the top of Horse Racing Nation's 2020 Kentucky Derby Rankings, but a new name has cracked the first 15 as Thousand Words continues his ascent.

A $1 million yearling, No. 14 Thousand Words beat a short but talented field in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), giving trainer Bob Baffert his sixth consecutive win since the race moved from Hollywood Park.

The same silks adorn the No. 1 spot with Dennis' Moment also campaigned by Albaugh Family Stable. Dale Romans trains that one, while Thousand Words is on the west coast in partnership with Spendthrift Farm.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Storm the Court, allowance winner Three Technique, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Structor and Ancient Warrior, a debut maiden breaker, are others in the current Top 5 of the rankings.

Other movers this week included the introductions of the Remsen Stakes (G2) 1-2 finishers to the rankings. The fast-closing runner-up Ajaaweed, at No. 33, checked in a few spots higher than No. 36 Shotski, the front-running Remsen winner.

While a few horses in action this week ascended the rankings, there were those that dropped, too.

Independence Hall, the Nashua Stakes (G3) winner expected to resurface on New Year's Day in the Jerome Stakes, dropped from No. 2 to No. 8.

Honor A.P., whose connections bypassed the Futurity for the Jan. 4 Sham Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park. He slipped from No. 7 to No. 15.
