Romans: Attachment Rate can capitalize if Tiz the Law falters

Kentucky Derby 2020 contender Attachment Rate had his final pre-race workout Sunday morning, breezing five furlongs in 1:01.20.

"I was wanting to go in 1:01 and two (fifths), he went 1:01 and one (fifth), so it was perfect," trainer Dale Romans said. "He looked great, full of energy, looked like he came off the track happy. Six days away -- we'll see."

Roman added of his colt, "He’s sound, he’s smart, he’s peaking."

Favorite Tiz the Law figures to pose a formidable challenge in the Derby, but Romans feels Attachment Rate is in with a puncher's chance.

"I really think he'll like the mile and a quarter," Romans said of Attachment Rate. "We all know it's Tiz the Law's race to lose, but if he stubs his toe, we'll be running him over."

Romans also noted how this year's Derby, which carries a $3 million purse, has a different feel because of the changes stemming from the pandemic.

"It feels like it’s more about winning the money now than it is the pageantry of the Derby. "And that may sound shallow, but that’s the way it feels," Romans said. You know, I never even thought about winning purse money in a Derby before, it was just about winning a Kentucky Derby. And this just feels a little different. This feels like a big race, not the big race. But we’ll turn the page on 2020 soon and get back to normal."
