Kentucky Derby 2019 odds: War of Will the new third choice
War of Will is expected to remain at New Orleans’ Fair Grounds for his final Kentucky Derby 2019 prep, but at least in one respect, the multiple graded stakes winner is on the move.
The Mark Casse-trained son of War Front dropped from 20-1 to be the William Hill U.S. co-third choice at 8-1 for the Derby coming out of his victory in last Saturday’s Risen Star Stakes (G2).
The March 23 Louisiana Derby (G2) is next up for War of Will, who shares his price with the flashy debut winner Hidden Scroll, whose 104 Beyer Speed Figure first out on Jan. 26 leads the 3-year-old crop.
The latest look at William Hill U.S.’ odds show familiar top choices in the favorite, Game Winner (9-2), and Improbable (6-1). According to the Daily Racing Form, the unbeaten Bob Baffert trainees could open their seasons in the same race March 9 in the San Felipe Stakes (G2).
Among other weekend winners, Galilean, who was dominant beating state-breds in Monday’s California Cup Derby, plummeted from 40-1 to 15-1. Southwest Stakes (G3) winner Super Steed sits at 25-1. And Anothertwistafate, who took the El Camino Real Derby on synthetic, remains at a lofty 75-1.
Additionally, since our last writing, Global Campaign, the 2-for-2 half-brother of Bolt d’Oro, is down to 20-1 from his opening price of 40-1.
How about some value? The established leading contenders have been spotted by the masses and in large part bet down. A few do stick out:
Sam F. Davis (G3) winner Well Defined remains at 75-1, while the recent Chad Brown-trained maiden winner Growth Engine sits at 100-1. Sueno and Long Range Toddy are both 75-1 as well having hit the board in the Southwest. Dream Maker at 60-1 is another trained by Casse who will go into a big prep off a commanding allowance victory.
