Kentucky Derby 2018 odds: Bolt d'Oro's favoritism grows
More than a half year out from the Kentucky Derby, the current favorite’s odds are already at a price shorter than you’ll get most of the field on the first Saturday in May.
Undefeated Bolt d’Oro’s price dropped to 10-1 from 12-1 this time last week in the latest odds released Monday by Wynn Last Vegas — apparently, the product of a nice return to the worktab.
For owner and trainer Mick Ruis, the son of Medaglia d’Oro drilled four furlongs in 48.80 seconds Sunday at Santa Anita Park in preparation for the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
“He went just like we were hoping,” Ruis said.
Another by Medaglia d’Oro, debut winner Montauk, is the 25-1 second choice with Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity winner Free Drop Billy at 30-1 for another week.
The Wynn has The Tabulator, winner of Churchill Downs’ Grade 3 Iroquois, alone at 35-1 before a slew of 40-1 shots now including Engage, who impressed around one turn in last Saturday’s Grade 3 Futurity at Belmont Park.
Engage should go longer in his next start for trainer Chad Brown, most likely in Belmont’s Nashua.
