Kentucky Derby: 12 horses stand out in Final Fractions Theory

Renegade’s deep-closing, four-length victory in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby catapulted him into the favorite’s role for Kentucky Derby 2026. That March 28 triumph also thrust him to the top of a frequently used handicapping prism.

Measuring the 20 horses currently invited to the main Derby draw, Renegade is among 12 who checked both boxes in Jennie Rees’s Final Fractions Theory.

Ed DeRosa’s fair odds for Kentucky Derby 2026.

Rees, a Kentucky turf writer turned racing publicist, discovered that most Derby winners since 1990 went 13.0 seconds or faster through the last furlong of their final prep races and-or 38.0 seconds over the last three furlongs.

Her theory was inspired by something a trainer told her decades ago about stretching young horses to the 1 1/4-mile Derby distance.

“I bet if you looked at it, horses that won the Derby came fast the last quarter-mile of their last prep,” Phil Thomas told Rees.

Most final preps cover 1 1/8 miles, and charts for those races do not show a final quarter time. So Rees adjusted and used the fractions at the three-quarter and stretch calls.

“I found there is a pattern,” she said. “Definitely.”

Last year Sovereignty was the fourth cashable Derby winner in a row and the 31st in the last 36 years to have checked at least one of the Final Fractions Theory boxes. In fact, he met both the standards with his second-place finish in the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

According to Equibase GPS charts, Renegade’s 11.84-second closing furlong was the fastest of all Derby contenders. The 36.57-second time for his last three furlongs was the fourth-fastest among the 35 contenders still listed by Churchill Downs on its qualifying leaderboard. The top 17 points earners from the U.S. and three international qualifiers are eligible to go in the gate May 2. The rest of the horses are on stand-by in case others above them drop out.

Incredibolt, Commandment, So Happy and Further Ado also met the 13.0 and 38.0 criteria in winning their final major preps. So did Emerging Market, although his Louisiana Derby (G2) triumph was different in that it was over 1 3/16 miles. Class President, who missed the Blue Grass (G1) after Pletcher did not like the way he looked last week, met the Final Fractions Theory standards with his victory March 1 in the 1 1/16-mile Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn.

Times for the 1,900-meter UAE Derby (G2) in Dubai and the 1,800-meter Fukuryu in Japan were converted to imperial equivalents of the closing 200 and 600 meters. Because past fractions were computed estimating a fifth of a second for each length behind the leader, the 2026 chart is shown in tenths of a second to maintain consistency.

The Final Fractions Theory does not take track conditions and biases into account, nor does it consider how much a horse is being urged to the finish. Its strength is its large sample size covering 25% of Derby history.
