Keeneland's QE II Challenge Cup: Who to use, who to toss
Ahead of Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland, handicapper Brandon Stauble offered his thoughts on one horse to use in your bets -- and one to toss. The QE II is set for a 5:30 p.m. Saturday post time at Keeneland, with full field odds and analysis available here.
USE: #3 Daddys Lil Darling
Although Julien Leparoux does not ride here, this filly has shown an affinity for the grass, and she's 20-1 on the morning line. Daddys Lil Darling was beaten only 2 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks and crushed foes in a $200,000 stakes at Kentucky Downs. This filly is getting better and is in the hands of a trainer (Kenny McPeek) who knows how to win big races, especially at his home track of Keeneland. It doesn’t hurt that this filly is cutting back in distance and should be even stronger second off of a freshening. Even if she doesn’t win, at her morning line odds she adds value to your exacta, trifecta and superfecta tickets.
TOSS: #6 La Coronel
She's likely to leave the gate at a much lower price than the 6-1 morning line. This filly usually takes money at the windows, and with Mark Casse starting the meet so hot at Keeneland, it would be no surprise to see it happen again. La Coronel's had no excuses in her last two starts. Yes, she did almost win last time, but she had things her own way on the front end over a Belmont turf course that plays very quick. In my opinion, she will be on the lead in here but she is still only a Grade 3 winner to her credit.
Good luck!
