Keeneland power failure leads to 45-minute delay Sunday

A power failure led to a 45-minute delay for the last three races on a clear, windy, 78-degree Sunday at Keeneland.

“We just had a temporary power outage,” said track spokesperson Amy Gregory, who added that the cause of what was called a partial failure still was being determined.

Horses were on the track for the seventh race when the electricity failed. They were sent back to the paddock while power was being restored. A frozen image of the grandstand crowd appeared on the track feed with a notice of a “technical delay” until live video coverage was restored, albeit with a limited graphics package.

After the seventh race, it was evident the infrastructure was limping back into place when track announcer Kurt Becker said, “Please disregard the prices posted on the infield board.”

The Grade 2, $350,000 Franklin Stakes, the Sunday feature, was pushed back from 4:44 to 5:32 p.m. EDT with the finale on the nine-race card rescheduled for 6:34 p.m. Sunset in Lexington, Ky., is at 7:02 p.m.

Just before the Franklin, it appeared the TV feed was fully back to normal with its pre-race graphics, although the live tote information still appeared spartan.
