Keeneland: Morning-line favorite Scylla is out of Madison

Two-time graded-stakes winner and morning-line favorite Scylla was scratched from Tuesday’s running of the Grade 1, $650,000 Madison Stakes at Keeneland.

Trainer Bill Mott told Daily Racing Form’s Marcus Hersh that Juddmonte’s homebred 5-year-old mare developed a fever Monday.

By Tapit out of First Defence mare Close Hatches, Scylla has not raced since she finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, losing by a length in November at Del Mar. Her most recent timed workout was March 29 at Payson Park in Florida.

A winner on debut two years ago at Keeneland, Scylla was the 8-5 program favorite in the Madison, a seven-furlong race on the fast main track. She and long shot Harbor Springs were scratched, leaving six older fillies and mares in the field.

Emery, a Grade 2 winner who finished a close second last out in the Inside Information (G2) on Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park, inherits the morning-line favorite’s role. The 4-year-old filly trained by Brad Cox is 3-1 in the program.

Scheduled to start Tuesday at 4:48 p.m. EDT, the Madison is the eighth of 11 races on Blue Grass Stakes day at Keeneland. The card originally was scheduled for Saturday, but it was postponed by storms that flooded parts of Kentucky.
