Kate's Main Man Beats Win Willy in Essex

Kate's Main Man, third behind Win Willy in a stakes at Oaklawn Park last month, turned the tables on his rival with a front-running win in the $100,000 Essex Handicap under clear skies at Oaklawn Park Feb. 13.

The Essex originally was scheduled for Feb. 5 but was delayed due to freezing weather that forced the track to cancel racing that day.

Ridden by Calvin Borel, Kate's Main Man held off even-money choice Win Willy, who was gaining on the inside through the lane, for a three-quarters of a length victory. The final time for the 1 1/16-mile event for older horses was 1:45.12 on a fast track.

Red-hot Randy Morse trains Kate's Main Man, a 6-year-old Iowa-bred gelding by Bernstein  , for owner Randy Patterson, alongtime trainer who won for the first time at Oaklawn.
