Karamanos, Garcia Win Two at Colonial
Rivals Horacio Karamanos and Luis Garcia, who have been atop the leaderboard standings for jockeys at Colonial Downs since 2005, took home two wins each on a nine-card card Sunday.
Karamanos, leading Colonial Downs rider in 2008, pointed two favorites to the winners’ circle in the second and ninth races. In the second event, Michael Pino saw success with Karamanos once again as Rose Medallion stalked the pace the entire way before drawing off to win by six lengths. It was the five year old mare’s third win in a row. To finish out the card, Karamanos rode Violette Juliet to her first win in five lifetime starts. The five year old mare dueled with rival Great Pack while setting the pace before edging away to win by 1 ½ lengths.
Luis Garcia rode back to back winners in the fourth and fifth races, guiding Emerald Song and Right to Work to victory. Emerald Song, a three year old filly trained by John Boniface, stalked the pace until the three eighths pole, where she hooked with Heartfully in a duel and proved best by a length. The win was the first for the Eurosilver filly. In the fifth race, Garcia and Doug O’Neill’s Right To Work split horses at the quarter pole and ran to a 2 ¼ length win after a bumpy start. It was the three year old filly’s third win in sixteen lifetime starts.
