Justique rallies from last to take the Desi Arnaz at Del Mar
Justique showed her jaw-dropping maiden victory was no fluke on Saturday, rallying from last with a sweeping wide move to capture the $100,000 Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar.
The John Shirreffs-trained 2-year-old daughter of Triple Crown winner Justify, raced by CRK Stable LLC, and jockey Victor Espinosa mimicked the tactics they used in her maiden score in July at Del Mar to notch her first stakes victory.
After breaking last in the field of seven, she dawdled more than 10 lengths behind front-runner Parody in the early stages of the seven-furlong race.
But as the field reached the turn, the 3-2 favorite began gobbling up ground on the far outside to inhale the field before drawing off to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Blessed Touch stayed on for second, 6 1/2 lengths clear of Naughty Lottie, who completed the trifecta.
Running time was 1:23.41.
Justique's lone setback from three starts came in the Chandelier Stakes (G2) on Oct. 8 at Santa Anita, when she checked in third, 5 1/2 lengths behind winner And Tell Me NoLies, winner of the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in her previous start.
Shirreffs said after the race that she wasn't fit enough for her first try at two turns and "got really tired" in the late stages of the race.
