Journalism leads 18 nominees for $1 million Haskell
Journalism, winner of the Preakness and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, leads a list of 18 nominations to the $1 million Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park on July 19.
The Haskell, to be contested for the 58th time, carries with it automatic entry for the winner into the Breeders’ Cup Classic. It is the only race restricted to 3-year-olds that awards a Breeders' Cup Classic bid.

Journalism, second in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, has never been worse than second in six graded-stakes tries. The Kentucky-bred son of Curlin, an $825,000 yearling purchase, already has banked $3,198,880 during his eight-race career.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, he is owned by the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert V. LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith.
Blue Grass (G1) runner-up Gosger, Blue Grass winner Burnham Square, Ohio Derby (G3) winner Mo Plex and Pegasus Stakes winner Bracket Buster are among the nominees.
Trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Haskell a record nine times, nominated Goal Oriented.
The 1 1/8-mile Haskell headlines a card that features the $600,000 United Nations (G2), the $500,000 Molly Pitcher (G3), the $400,000 Monmouth Cup (G3) and the $300,000 Matchmaker Stakes (G3).
Last year’s Haskell Stakes day card produced an all-sources record handle of $21.7 million. The crowd of 38,976 was the largest since 2015.
