Journalism is 5-1 favorite in final Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Four weeks in advance of Kentucky Derby 2025, bettors made Grade 2 San Felipe winner Journalism the mild 5-1 favorite with 2024 champion 2-year-old Citizen Bull the 8-1 second choice in the sixth and final pool of the pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

After the pool closed Saturday at 4 p.m. EDT, Journalism finished first and Citizen Bull fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). The three-day KDFW closed in advance of the last three major prep races, including the Wood Memorial (G2) and Tuesday’s rescheduled Blue Grass (G1).

Total handle for the pool that was open from Thursday to Saturday was $483,121 with $353,160 in the win pool and $129,961 in exactas. That was a 29% gain vs. last year’s $376,038 that included $268,996 in the win pool and $107,042 in exactas.

A total of $2,330,748 was bet on Derby and Oaks future wagers this year, a 14% increase from last year’s $2,052,391.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, offered for a 27th consecutive year, enables bettors to wager in advance on possible Derby contenders that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the race.

The $5 million Kentucky Derby for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds will be run for the 151st consecutive year May 3 at Churchill Downs.
