John Velazquez is suspended 3 days for careless riding at Saratoga
Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez was suspended for three days for careless riding in a race at Saratoga on Sunday.
He will serve his suspension on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, according to the stewards' ruling on the New York Gaming Commission website. Velazquez waived his right to a hearing.
Velazquez crossed the finish line first Scope in the sixth race, a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-olds on turf. According to the Equibase chart, he nudged Dynadee at the five-sixteenths pole and traded bumps with Teleport.
Irad Ortiz Jr., aboard Teleport, claimed a foul, according to the chart, and a stewards' inquiry found that Scope had interfered with Teleport. He was disqualified from first and placed second, with Teleport promoted to first.
Both Scope and Teleport are trained by Todd Pletcher. Scope, sired by Gun Runner, was a $400,000 purchase as a yearling and is owned by Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert LaPlenta.
Teleport, an Ireland-bred colt by Lope de Vega, was purchased by Repole Stable as a yearling for $403,307 and is owned by that stable with Newtown Anner Stud Farm.
